Dayz, or Dayz Standalone, as us fossils used to call it, had a new update released on the 15th of April. Experimental 1.28 is out now, and with it comes a host of supposed improvements to various aspects of the game.

The most important change is being made to the way close-range encounters work when corner peaking or generally moving too close to an object with a weapon equipped. Previously, the Dayz formula had two weapon states for this scenario: the normal shooting stance and lifted.

With the new Experimental 1.28 update, the weapon lifting will be less binary, and will instead feature a gradual increase and decrease to angle of attack moving forward and away from objects. This should make it feel similar to how weapon lift works in Escape from Tarkov.

In addition to the weapon lift changes, Bohemia has introduced new scopes to Dayz Standalone: The Sporting sight, the PSO-6, and the Marksman scope.

The Sporting will act as a commonly found, low-zoom optic that replaces the hunting scope as the “entry-level” solution to ranged engagements. The PSO-6 brings a 6x zoom level to the PSO scope family, which are used on eastern weapons like the Mosin Nagant. Lastly, the Marksman scope features a variable 3.5x-10x magnification level and will act as the cream-of-the-crop option for late-game players who want the absolute best scope for long-range engagements.

Finally, Bohemia wraps up the update with a swath of visual and audio changes. A scope’s damage state will not be shown visually through the scope’s clarity when aiming down sight and support for illuminated reticles was added.

The Experimental 1.28 audio update mostly revolved around tweaking some of the ways infected and survivor audio works (namely, lowering their decibels). Though there is also a new soundscape to be heard in the Sakhal caves.

To play Dayz Experimental, make sure to launch the “Experimental” version from your Steam games list instead of the normal “Dayz” option. Remember that these version aren’t stable and that bugs should be expected (in greater number than normal, anyway.)
