Despite popular belief, I don’t like to relish in the perceived failure of a title’s launch. Civilization 7’s current 24 hour peak player count on the steam charts has dropped to almost a third of what Civilization 6 currently has, and even dropped below Civilization 5’s player count at one point.

Is this funny? In a way, yes. Do I think Firaxis deserve this after releasing a 100 dollar beta build for their most loyal of players? Yeah, I think most probably likely I do. But I also feel for the developers a little bit. When you don’t try to change things up, players will complain. And Firaxis really tried to change things up with Civ 7.

Unfortunately, you can’t just change things in a series to abate the crowd. You also have to make your game at least roughly equal in terms of quality to its predecessor(s). Civilization 7, while perhaps a wealth of fun for those new to the series, has been met with a mixed reception among the 4x faithful. The game is simply not equal to it’s older brothers.

Civilization 7 still has a long road towards becoming fully developed (or, perhaps, getting out of beta), and thus is competing with games that have had DLC sales and years of patches to sure up the gameplay. In truth, it shouldn’t be surprising to see previous Firaxis titles holding their own with the new kid on the block. Even in a universe where Civilization 7 was fairly priced and completed upon release, this would likely be somewhere near the current state of things.
