Bethesda’s Creation Engine, which was used to create their games from Skyrim leading up to Starfield, which uses Creation Engine 2, is an entity that garners about as much hate from gamers as it does love from programmers.

The nature of this relationship is owed to the engine’s fallible behavior when interacting with variable frame rates above what a specific title is designed for.

In Fallout 4, one such behavior can be observed when loading into a cell when frame rates are above certain values. Normally, loading times aren’t anything to boast or complain about about when dealing with Bethesda, but during these CE moments of annoyance, they can take upwards of 5 minutes.

To Fix This Issue

Most players tend to simply disable V-Sync. Disabling this option essentially takes the leash off the game, letting it operate at frame rates that aren’t equal to your monitor’s refresh rate. While it isn’t exactly clear to the most tech-savy of us why this works, it often does the trick.

The only issue with this fix is that it unties your game’s FPS at all times, not just loading screens. And as aformentioned, high, unlocked frame rates do not mix well with the Creation Engine, and can lead to some wonky physics.

If your PC is strong enough to get frame rates that cause physics issues (and trust me, you’ll know if that’s the case), you can simply lock your monitors refresh rate to a nice 60-90 FPS, enable V-sync, and then use this mod to (hopefully) fix the issue.

And, if all of that sounds like too much effort, don’t feel bad about giving up on the game. There are many reasons it was recieved with mixed feelings, but optimization is certainly one of them.
