When assigned as a slayer task, Hellhounds are generally either an instant-skip or a block. In Oldschool Runescape, there are a few reasons to do them, though. Here’s the basic rundown:
Hellhounds are mediocre XP/HR on task, and they feature no drops other than reliable hard clue scrolls and hit rather accurately. For this reason you should only do Hellhounds if:
- You want to AFK the task in Kourend Catacombs
- You want hard clue scrolls
- You want to kill Cerberus
If those three options don’t appeal to you, skip the task or block it, as it’s a relatively weighty assignment across most slayer masters, and will be given often.
When to commit to a Hellhound task:

If you’re 91 slayer, killing Cerberus, found within the Taverly Dungeon, is ideal for chipping away at your kill count, which inches you closer to a potential Crystal and Stone drops for late-game equipment upgrades. At this point, you shouldn’t need help from this article, though.
For hard clue scrolls, simply kill the Hellhounds found in the Kourend Catacombs. Complete the clues as they drop, repeat.
For afking, follow the advice above, but skip the clue step. The reason you should opt for the Kourend Catacombs locations is that the Hellhounds near the entrance are aggressive and close to one another, meaning a task can be completed by throwing on prayer-boosting gear, protecting from melee, and afking for 5 minutes before teleporting to restore prayer with your Ardy cape. Repeat the process for a free, easy and AFK task.
