Black Dragons, for almost all purposes, are a horrible slayer task. Here’s your thirty-second guide to get them over with:
For 99% of people:
Kill baby black dragons in the Taverly Dungeon.
Black dragon tasks are usually very tiny in numbers assigned, and since killing the adults means killing the strongest chromatic dragons in the game for little reward outside of one very rare drop, killing the babies, although cruel, is most efficient for getting the task over with.
This, of course, only applies to people who decided to not block the task in the first place. Since there are tasks that are more annoying than Black Dragons, it wouldn’t be that unreasonable to keep them unblocked in place of something else.
Go to Taverly Dungeon, where the Blue Dragons reside, climb up to the slayer portion of the cave, and kill some babies.
For Those Who Are Committed (or hate themselves)
Kill regular Black Dragons, Brutal Black Dragons, or the King Black Dragon. Regular Black Dragons outside of the Wilderness Slayer Cave drop the draconic visage at a rate of 1/10,000. Not likely, but crazier things have happened.
Brutal Black Dragons also drop the Visage at the same rate, but have a wildly improved drop table to make up for the fact that they are the highest combat level Black Dragon in the game. At the time of writing this article, August 2024, they each drop an average of about 30k worth of loot per kill. Great for Ironmen, great for mains. (Weakness to water spells, btw.)
Lastly, the King Black Dragon, while not representative of any efficient form of bossing, does drop the Visage at a rate of 1/5,000, as well as the Dragon Pickaxe, a far more useful item, at a rate of 1/1,000.
Given how tedious killing KBD is, being able to take some time and enjoy the boss with a slayer helm for the sake of nostalgia alongside a chance at some moderately useful items makes it an attractive option for those of us who enjoy a little relaxed PvM, which should be about 110% of anyone who actually enjoys playing this game in the first place.
The average KBD kill is worth just under 25k at the time of writing this article. (Just go kill the little ones.)
